Sport and Socialization

Tucker Schmidt
In class on February 10, we discussed sport and socialization. Socialization is defined as the active process of learning the culture of a society. It occurs when we interact with others. Also, socialization involves the formation of ideas about both who we are and what we find important in our own lives. We learned about the various agents of sport socialization including family, peer groups, school, community, and mass media. We also learned about the qualities that a true role model must possess like honesty, commitment, and good sportsmanship. We also learned about what it takes to become an athlete in a sport and the decision to continue in sport. Socialization plays a major role in sport.
Sports have a major impact on socialization. It is noted that high school sports are the perfect place for individuals to socialize. This is stated, as these individuals share a similar interest. One of the reasons why children choose to continue sport depends on the ideas about sport’s connection to other interests and goals. According to a recent study, quality sport programs have the potential to help create great relationships between peers. Socialization is also said to be different between boys and girls. It is suggested that boys’ participation in organized sport helps them socialize into a traditional gender role. On the other hand, it is widely believed that girls participate in sport because it serves as a social benefit. Girls’ participation is sport is also believed to be a way to break away from the common gender stereotypes. Parents feel that it is a great idea to let their children participate in sport because it helps them learn how to interact with adults. They also feel that youth involvement in sport and help create a better relationship with their teachers as well. I feel that this article makes sense for this class because it discusses the effect of socialization in sport for both children and adults.
